Discover the fascinating and often dark histories behind illustrations of the natural world in an eight-week course that combines art history with hands-on art projects!
We’ll explore some of the most beautiful and bizarre images of nature from Ancient Greece to the Age of Enlightenment, and discuss the surprising range of motivations behind their creation. Each week brings a presentation on a different field of natural illustration (botany, zoology, cabinets of curiosities, and more), followed by a prompt for artistic interpretation.
Students will develop a series of nature-inspired images as they explore new approaches to conveying information while experimenting in mixed media. The projects are designed for
anyone with an interest in the natural world.
Materials
Students will work in the media of their choice. I will demonstrate with acrylic inks and watercolor pencils. Recommended materials: Pencils; sketch pad; a few pieces of 8×10 watercolor or wet media paper; water based color media of your choice along with brushes, palette, etc.
