The ability to develop visual memory, which is critical to plein air painting, can be transferred to working inside from a photograph. The concepts of plein air painting can help students develop paintings with greater vibrancy, atmosphere, depth, and sense of light.

The focus of the course will be to:

  • Expose students to the process of two different mediums. Each class will include a demo of the same scene/photo in both oil and watercolor by the two different instructors.
  • Help students understand how the camera flattens out the scene and ways to overcome this, and
  • Learn to eliminate unnecessary details, highlight the point of interest, and design an interesting composition that will keep the viewer in the painting.

Learning these concepts in oil and watercolor will help students understand how the creative process transcends the medium and how developing this flexibility will help them find their voice as painters. In the end, the goal will be the development of broken color, fresh brushwork, immediacy, and spontaneity – these are common to good watercolor and oil paintings.
