Building on acquired skills, students will develop technical and artistic skills using both dry and wet media. All are welcome.

Subjects: we will begin with still life and move on to, more complex subjects such as plein air landscape and portrait basics.

Drawing Fundamentals + will include:

Design/composition

o Using placement, emphasis and equilibrium
o Color/value as visual weight

Observation

o Seeing the plane before the details
o The visual language of space

Value

o Value gradations
o Soft and hard edges
o Creating form, mass and space

Color

o Designating warm and cool planes with tints, tones and shades
o Introducing local and pictorial color
o Introduction to color theory and it’s utility
o Working with dry pigments: colored pencils or pastels
o Continue with wet: gouache, watercolor, acrylic or oil paint

This course builds on basic drawing fundamentals in a sequential manor. Using value as the underpinning for chromatic enrichment, students will proceed to color-based compositions adding more interest to the composition. Mixing media will be encouraged.
