Spring transformations are engaging ways to nature journal and get ideas for your artwork. In this 4-week online course we will explore your nearby-nature and its changes. You might be studying the growth, bloom and wilt of a trillium, or the breeding behavior of a hummingbird, or the work of a mason bee pollinating your garden and building its nest for its next generation. There is so much to take in. The weekly format will include new topics and nature journaling strategies, a 30-minute self-study in one’s backyard or nearby nature, and group reflections and discussions about student observations and nature journaling pages. Outside of class, we will have a weekly theme to explore—the amount of work you choose to do will depend on what is right for you. We will use a platform called Padlet to share course content, resources and student work. The course is student-focused and interactive. The goal of the course is to develop one’s skills and create a habit and sharing process in nature journaling that includes slowing down, taking time to observe and document changes in a subject and a small area over time. Come play, discover, and connect!

About the Artist: Cindy Flanagan is a naturalist, artist, and educator, who has dedicated her work to connecting people to nature and place through art, science, and adventure. Her natural science illustration work stems from her nature journaling process. She connects to her subjects by going out, observing and asking questions. Her less than perfect sketches and notes of whatever she is exploring in the field gives her insights and understanding, foster her curiosity, and springboard her creativity to capture the uniqueness of her subjects and their stories. Cindy’s formal art training and nature illustrating came later in life, and she hopes is inspiration to others that anyone can learn a skill, you just need to take time to learn about it and put in the practice.
