Explore the exquisite variety of form, function, and structural adaptations of skulls. Students will work from published references to produce their illustrations. This course meets online: 3 hours per class for 4 weeks.
Course Objectives:
- learn major parts of the skull (brain case, rostrum, zygoma, mandible)
- learn the fundamental design of skulls and understand that the differences in skulls are a result of variations on a common theme/framework dictated by an animal’s lifestyle
- final project will depict a continuous tone illustration of a skull of the student’s choice in lateral and dorsal views on tone (grey or tan) paper using coloured pencils and black and white ink
Week 1: Intro to cranial anatomy and review of materials and supplies, resources, demo
Week 2: Creating accurate skull illustration using measuring instrument(s), or grid
Week 3: Render skull #1 in side view
Week 4: Render skull #2 in side view OR render skull #1 in different view from week 3
- Having a basic drawing skills and an understanding light and shade is a prerequisite.
- All classes meet online and will be recorded for your personal use or if you prefer to watch the recording on your own time and cannot make the class time.
