The joy of painting with watercolor is conveying the feeling of a place and moment in time with spontaneity unique to this transparent medium.  In this workshop we will focus on how to allow pigment and water to interact to convey the beauty of a scene with a focus on the source of light, season and atmosphere.  Students will learn about how watercolor pigment and water work together to create unexpected beauty and to work with what develops in the scene rather than trying to overcontrol the outcome or overfocus on detail.

We will work on how to drop pigment into water at various strengths, how to allow the flow of pigment and water to create the scene or image, and how to guide the process while allowing the painting to develop.   We will also focus on understanding how composition, range of values, color, and source of light affect the scene.

In addition to watercolor brushes, we will use plastic cards, palette knives and carved sticks to apply ink and pigment to create interesting effects in land and seascapes and to open the possibilities of how pigment can create transparent and luminous effects when we allow it to flow.

Please bring your favorite watercolor supplies, and it is recommended that students bring waterproof acrylic ink in whatever colors you wish (brown/umber and black are recommended), as well as a palette knife and/or old plastic cards, and disposable gloves for painting with ink, Instructor will provide carved sticks.

There will be several instructor demos throughout the day and individual instruction.

All levels of students welcome.
