This three-day plein air workshop will focus on the essential components in developing a coastal landscape painting. We will meet each day at LAA to prepare materials for the day and then carpool to location. On day one, Jackie will paint a comprehensive demo at the Lieutenant River in Old Lyme behind the Florence Griswold Museum. Basic art principles will be discussed from composition, to color mixing, brushwork and light and form. Students will paint the rest of the day with the aid of an initial thumbnail sketch while receiving individual guidance tailored for each students skill level.
On day two, we will carpool from LAA to a selected location. Jackie will discuss the importance of small studies and present a 30 minute demo. Students will begin by making small 4 x 6” up to 6 x 8” studies of skies, trees, rocks and water. The latter half of the day, they will paint a full composition.
Although oil colors will be the demonstration focus, all media are welcome for working and practice. This experience will be about process and not the completion of finished paintings. The event is intended to advance your skill set and your artistic perceptions to further your life as a painter.
The last day will be determined by the experience of the first two days and/or weather considerations. Either in the field or in the studio we will conclude your three day experience.
Skill Level: This course is appropriate for all painters from beginner to advanced. Regardless of skill level, we will all enjoy the study and beauty of nature, camaraderie, friendship and the sharing of a mutual passion. It promises to be informative and fun.
