“Excellence in painting means when the right color taken at the right value and applied onto the right spot”. This 5-day oil painting workshop with Zufar Bikbov offers a natural connection of Plein Air work experience to your work in your studio. Main subjects we will re-explore are town views and landscapes that most of us observe every day. Transitioning from Plein Air studies to finishing work in the studio is another major paint. Students will learn what they need to focus on while painting outdoors. Every morning and afternoon session, Zufar will do an hour long demonstration followed by 2 hour students’ practice. Major focus will be on simplification, finding composition and balance of shapes, values and colors in landscape, expression on canvas effects of light on sunny days and color-values-temperature on overcast days. Morning session will be assigned for outdoor painting while afternoon session (after lunch) will be dedicated to studio time for finishing and review results, analysis and answering questions. Workshop discussions and demonstrations include:
  • Strategies for finding right view and composition
  • Underpainting layer and block-in
  • Secrets of brush work
  • Understanding of value-color-temperature balance
  • Final painting layer using full palette
Second half of summer offers deeper color variety and make us think to get ready for colors of fall. So let’s boost our outdoor painting skills via knowledge, practice and analysis so then later in the season you can work on larger studio pieces. Bonuses: One of five days will be assigned for Nocturne painting demo and students’ studio practice. Review of linear perspective as well as general rules of composition via online webinar prior to the class. This will decrease the time of landscape basics explanation and will let students focus on practical aspects. Levels/Ages: Artists with intermediate painting skills level and experience of work in Studio which are looking to start or improve outdoor and studio Landscape and Townscape painting skills.
