What is stick and ink? An alternative to drawing with a pen, in this workshop you will learn to use a sharpened stick (provided by us) dipped into ink to create more free and spontaneous drawings, followed by a watercolor wash to add a colorful spontaneity and finish to the piece. Drawing and painting in this way allows more freedom and variety of marks as you create your composition, and it eliminates the tendency to overwork paintings. These paintings are finished works in and of themselves, or can be studies for other paintings.

This course can help students develop a technique that will lead to more modern mark making and abstract images that convey the spirit of the scene. By observing demos in stick and ink by two different instructors, students can learn the technique of producing loose vibrant paintings.

Any level of student welcome. Students will need to bring their own watercolors, paper, and brushes and we will provide the carved sticks and ink. We recommend bringing a variety of sizes of watercolor paper, and bringing tube paints rather than pans.
