NO MATTER THE SUBJECT—animal, vegetable or mineral—this class will explore Oil Painting and its unique properties. From conception to completion, we will discuss and carry out the various stages of painting: from placement on the canvas and a strong composition to the initial block-in, to laying in value, color and halftone to create form, and finally fine-tuning with highlights and accents.
Still life arrangements using natural light to create a unified dramatic arrangement will be set up. Those who want to work on an unfinished plein air piece or work from a good quality reference photo are welcome to do that as well. Individual demonstrations will take place throughout the session.
Highlights include:
*Discussion of the importance of good draftsmanship, the restrictions of the photograph, and the benefits of drawing from life
*How to use a good composition and the flow of light to unify your painting
*How to create form using simple shapes of shadow, light and halftone
*Recognizing, choosing and mixing the accurate value, color and temperature to create form and using the right tools to master textural effects
